There is only one thing you can say at a time like this: YABBA DABBA DOO!!!
It is no secret that I am a huge fan of food/cereal mascots. Ever since first dipping their toes in the world of action figure production, Jada has done an amazing job bringing us figures of Cereal Monsters, Tony the Tiger, and others. Now, there are stalwarts of the cereal aisle to be sure, but these two new figures offer us something on a different level. Cereal guys to be sure, but much more, Fred and Barney are giants in the world of cartoon and pop culture iconography.

The Flintstones staying power as brand representatives for cereals (and vitamins!) for multiple generations is really, REALLY impressive. I mean, the Flintstones cartoon ran in the 1960s(!!!), and its presence is still felt today. Having grown up in the heyday of TBS reruns and cereal and vitamin consumption, these two new figures strike all the right chords with me, and at multiple levels.

There have never been good figures of Fred and Barney PERIOD, let alone as cereal promotors. So, what the cool team at Jada has done here is made them all about Fruity and Cocoa Pebbles cereal, but also as two figures that can stand on their own as regular Flintstones cartoon characters. As excited as that makes me for the continuation of the food mascots line, it also makes me want Jada to go all in on a Hanna-Barbera line. But that is a conversation for another time…

These start with the theme of having their boxes look resemble the cereal boxes, and that so fun and effective. The flap makes the figures and accessories all clearly visible, and I love the “Action Figure Facts” on the spine that bites off of the nutrition information on the actual cereal. For these releases, Fred is Fruity Pebbles, while Barney gets Cocoa Pebbles. I am sure it will be a knock-down, drag-out discussion, but I am SOUNDLY on the Cocoa Pebbles side, and I we can debate that topic until the end of time.

Both figures are wonderfully on-model, and they of the highest quality when it comes to production value. The sculpting work is lovely, the paint is clean, the joint engineering is strong, but smooth, and all of the parts are easily swappable. Fred gets an angry alternate portrait, while Barney’s is more bewildered. That perfectly matches the “BARNEY, MY PEBBLES!” interactions from the cereal commercials, but also the general frustrations of Fred from the cartoons.

The accessories are a ton of fun, too, and this is where the cereal mascot aspect of these figures really comes out. Like the Cereal Monsters and Tony the Tiger, the are small facsimiles of the cereal boxes, along with stone-age spoons, bowls of Pebbles, and swappable hands. I have to give MAJOR kudos to the cereal bowls here, especially the Fruity Pebbles – the sculpting and paint are amazingly convincing of the real thing, and the team did some great work here. I also love that the bowls have peg holes to work with the appropriate hands so Fred and Barney can hold them in very natural fashion.

These are probably the best food mascot figures Jada has done so far, and that is saying something with the likes of what has come before. Fred and Barney are just perfect, no matter if you think of them more as cereal enthusiasts, or cartoon Honeymooners facsimiles. Again, it makes me want so many more cartoon figures, but to keep in the food mascots world. there are several more Pebbles variations, and the other Flintstones characters have all been featured on the boxes. So, let’s see Dino, Wilma, Betty, and Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm (I am using the Funko Minis as stand-ins here) to complete all the cast and varieties.

Don’t miss these, order them from BBTS.
