It feels great to be back on the Street. Sesame Street, that is! NECA is back with the latest addition to their wonderful Sesame line, and it is in the form of tallest resident in the neighborhood – Big Bird!
I have made it clear since it was first announced that this is one of my favorite action figure lines going right now, and these just cannot release fast enough. After a bit of dip, Super Grover arrived this past spring, and now Big Bird is here to bring all the yellow (plastic) feathers. Arguably the most beloved and iconic Sesame Street character ever, it was clear early on that Big Bird would have to be special, and well, BIG – and NECA did not hold back.
If you have any of these figures (you should!), or if you have been following this line, you know the attention to the small details and Muppet-y goodness is the highlight. These characters look like they stepped right off the screen, and Big Bird does that and then some. The sculpting of the individual feathers alone is so impressive, and he fits in seamlessly with Bert, Ernie, The Count, and Grover. This is instantly the centerpiece of the collection and it really cool that we have gotten a very ambitious figure so early in the line.
Standing at nearly 11 inches tall, he is definitely BIG, and as this line centers on the characters being in 1:10 (or 7″) scale, he needed to tall in order to be done correctly. His body shape and proportions don’t exactly lend themselves well to articulation, but NECA came through and provided all of the essential joints you would expect, and then some. I am quite please in the rage of movement in the neck, arms, and body especially. You don’t need Big Bird to hit Spider-Man poses, but he definitely has iconic stances and expressions, and this figure can achieve them quite well.
Big Bird comes with his teddy bear Radar, as well as his necktie and scarf. Originally there was the Mr. Hooper sketch, too, but I think that had to be removed due to likeness rights questions. Additionally, he has three sets of swappable hands, and two portraits. The iconic look you most certainly know, but NECA also included the very different season one head sculpt, too. I am glad this is here as it is an important historical nod, but if you are not familiar with it, the look can be quite jarring. I love that it matches the bit of edginess that the early Sesame Street seasons held, so I will probably need a second figure to display them both.
Big Bird is another outstanding achievement in a line that becoming everything I ever wanted from Sesame Street in plastic. He is just great, and fun figure to pose with a ton of personality. Hopefully the line has now settled into its pace and we will see more frequent releases. Oscar the Grouch is up next, and after that, I think Herry might be in the queue, so I cannot wait.
