Unveiling Cyborg Donatello: NECA's Latest TMNT Figure

The TMNT hits from NECA keep on comin’. Last month’s Toy Fair taught us there are still a LOT of different avenues and eras to explore, both ongoing and new. This time we go back to those early Mirage Comics days, and strange realities and alternate realities the Turtles encountered. “What if?” style futures were brought to light, and my favorite brother found himself amidst a metallic nightmare in the form of Cyborg Donatello.

I have been saying this for a bit now, but the moment you start doubting NECA’s ability and willingness to “go there” is the moment they do, in fact, go there. Even with the expansive collection we have accumulate it is still wild to see figures like this make it to plastic. Don’t get wrong – this is an important historical era that deserves to be memorialized (and immortalized) in plastic, but man, whodathunkit?

This figure is big and beefy (a thicc boy, if you will), and seeing Donatello like this shows how frightening those times could be. He is mainly encased in metallic cybernetic armor, and the paint details illustrate those artist effects well. I love the highlights and shading, and the line work does right by the source material. The swappable bionic right hand is playground for Turtle body horror and you can swap fists, metal bo hands, and knife-y fingers at will. Yes, that is a sentence you just read.

There more swappable hands to cover the organic arm, as well as two portraits: one angry, and one REALLY angry. Just for the sake of posterity you also get the party hat for twisted celebrations of the years that awful, and fortunately – hypothetical, future held. If you have ever thought to yourself that “your” era of the TMNT got weird at times, take comfort in its tradition.

This is a pretty great figure, and it moves quite well for as bulky as it is. Cyborg Donatello released alongside another stocky future Turtle in Shredder Raphael, so I will have more on him in just a bit. For now, you can get this guy at Target, but he should be making the rounds at the usual other spots soon, too.
