Evil-Lyn Joins the Masterverse Vintage Collection at Walmart

It’s #MOTUMonday and we are back again with a look at another Masterverse Vintage Collection figure – Evil-Lyn! This evil sorceress became a top lieutenant of Skeletor since her debut in the original 1980s line, and she has been a stalwart of all MOTU lines since.

Like all Vintage Collection figures, this new release celebrates that long Masters history, while giving Lyn all the modern sensibilities. Even with being a Wal-Mart exclusive, and thus, tricky to find, I have really enjoyed this line, and Evil-Lyn is a perfect addition. She is counterpart to Teela, both in form and function, and her sneering visage and jaundice complexion helps her continue to stand out, even in a like of barbarians and weirdos.

Lyn has done well for herself in the Masterverse line, first in the New Eternia imprint, and now here. The figures are very different from each other, but both do a wonderful job embodying the character. The yellow skin and blue costume recall the 80s very well here, but at the same time, this figure is not totally beholden to what has come before. Well, from the vintage line at any rate.

Yep, you can have a very faithful Masterverse recreation of the original figure, but there are also some accessories and costume pieces that allow you to borrow from other iterations. So, if your iconic Lyn is an amalgamation of some of the different versions, this figure has you covered. This line continues to go a bit further with each figure than I would have originally expected, and that is always a great thing.

This figure, of course, mostly built on the VC Teela base. Some things never change when it comes to this, and while there have been versions of EL throughout the years that don’t hold to that formula, it was the right thing to do here. The color palette continues to obscure the obvious reuse, but it still lets the literal duality of the Evil and Heroic Warrior shine through. This is a good base, if not a bit stiff in the joints, so I would recommend giving Lyn a hot bath before posing her. You don’t HAVE to do it, but it helps, especially with the knees.

Lyn’s portrait also recalls with original figure – it is unfriendly, but not sneering or instantly menacing. She is the OG queen of RBF, and she wears it well, but I could see how some people would want to see something more overtly threatening. With her you get two grip hands, as well as fist and her open spell-casting hand. That last one is more important here than it really ever has been for her, but I will get to that in just a moment. Like Teela, the “flat” hand is not present, but I am not sure anyone would really miss that.

Now, the accessories are where this figure really shines. The first is more of a costume piece in the form of a detachable cape. Now, I know a LOT of people prefer her with a cape (I am not one of them), and Filmation made it iconic, so I am pleased that it is present and easily removable if you don’t want it. Options, friends. You also get her original iconic crystal ball staff, but also the short-handled version, once again made famous by Filmation. This might be a spot where I go back and forth – while I am first and foremost a vintage toy line/card back fan, the small orb holder is pretty cool.

The final accessory is magic effect that can snapped on either of the crystals, and it is AWESOME. Like, maybe we have gotten something like this in the past, but this is hands down the coolest effect Lyn has gotten for this, at least in my opinion. It is colorful and instantly magical, and it looks just as appropriate as a power blast as it does as fog as Lyn uses it to spy on He-Man. I really dig it.

This is a fun figure and a great entrant into the Vintage Collection line. After the original 8-Back figures, Evil-Lyn is about as essential as it comes. Now, I REALLY hope she is not the final figure in the line, but the future after her is uncertain at this time. She would make it ending on an odd number and the Heroic Warriors down a man, so maybe we can get Moss Man (a mostly simple repaint of Beast Man) to even it out. Or, maybe, just MAYBE we can keep this good thing going and see lots of other characters, too. Look for Lyn at Walmart now.
