Granted, these figures have been out for a little bit, but they had to wait in my BBTS Pile of Loot for awhile, so I am just now getting around to them. In the pantheon of 80s nostalgia properties receiving premium action figure updates, this line certainly deserves to be amongst the likes of G.I. Joe, TMNT, and others. These figures are so fun, and the best part is that I get to enjoy them with my daughters, too.
No, I did not collect Strawberry Shortcake as a kid. BUT… I do remember them vividly, and even then being able to recognize the Purple Pie Man as an elite villain. Also, the wonderful berry scents are a core memory for me, as my friend from across the street had a little sister who had so many of the dolls. Now, my girls have fun playing with these in the collection space, and once again, Strawberry is making core memories for me.
A trademark of a good action figure line is that series tend to get better as the line moves on. That is certainly the case here. I like the designs of many of these over what has come before, but the important piece is that these have better engineering and construction over the first series. The hats stay on better, many of the joints are stronger, and the accessories are a lot of fun. Blueberry Muffin is probably my favorites, but Lemon Meringue is a close second, and Raspberry Tart and Apple Dumplin’ are great, too.
I mentioned the accessories, but this line also prioritizes one of my very favorite action figure line attributes: the sidekick characters. Like the first series, every figure comes with a little friend, and if you like Cheesecake Mouse, or Tea Time Frog, they are rendered wonderfully here.
This line is shaping up to be a lot of fun, and does the property a ton of justice. Don’t skip over these just because you weren’t into them as a kid, because these figures are a ton of fun. With eight of the kids, and the two primary villains in the can, I am excited to see where this line goes. No matter what, it will smell BERRY GOOD!
