The Right Hand of Doom has returned, and this time, Hellboy is ready to go toe to toe with all of the villains of the classic 5.5″ “muscle” lines.
When BFS announced they were working with Mike Mignola on the Hellboy license, I was understandably excited. They were quick to show off figures in my favorite scale (1:12), and they look like they stepped right off the page. Those will be coming later this year, but to get things started, Hellboy has made his was into the new Immortal Champions line, and it’s uh, one HELL of a debut.
If you are unfamiliar with the Immortal Champions line (SHAME!), a few weeks ago, I had a chance to look at the new Conan figures that are hitting soon. This line is designed for compatibility with new “Origins” lines, as well as those classic 80s action figure lines that really brought the muscles in the 5.5″ scale. I mentioned in my previous review that these new IC figures execute very well on that aesthetic and functionality, but also take it to a new level.
I am happy to say that Hellboy continues those strengths, and it is damned near impossible to not have a fun time while playing around with this figure. All of the joints and engineering are strong, but also buttery smooth, so Hellboy can hit all the poses. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the RHoD is retains all of the standard IC articulation, including the partial wrist ball joint. The plastic choices are all great here as well, so this figure can survive plenty of strenuous play and posing, and all of the joint discs are cast in the correct color of plastic, so no paint is needed there.
Hellboy, by is nature and design, is a very expressive character, so it great that this new plastic rendition helps carry that forward. The articulation pattern allows him to hit some very dynamic poses (those rocker ankles are doing amazing work here), and the bright red color is perfect for Hellboy in this line. The portrait sculpture brings plenty of detail to capture that classic Hellboy frown, and I love that the simple chest hair paint applications make all the difference in the world.
His iconic Samaritan revolver is also included, as is sword lifted from a popular cover painting. He can wield both of these perfectly, so I appreciate the trigger finger and up and down wrist hinge on the left hand. When not in use, the Samaritan fits snugly into the belt holster for safe keeping. Remember it should be held so it can be drawn out via the left hand. That said, the great part about this scale is that many, many weapons from various lines and scales can be compatible, and as Hellboy is a bit of a collector himself, he can gather all kinds of weaponry from defeated foes. I imagine the Havoc Staff would run wild here.
Oh man, this is just getting started and it is already a ton of fun. Hellboy is a prefect entrant to the Immortal Champions line, and I am ready for him to fight alongside Conan, He-Man, Lion-O, and all the rest. That said, I want ALL the members of the BPRD to join Hellboy in this line. I can already picture the likes of Lobster, Abe, and the rest in this scale and aesthetic, and it makes me giddy. Hellboy should be hitting soon, be sure to get your preorder in ASAP.
